Principal's Report

As we move towards the middle of Term 3, it has been a positive and exciting term where our students have diverse opportunities to get involved through the Arts, Clubs, Sports, and Leadership. These activities ensure our students feel connected through being involved in activities both in and outside the classroom.

College Events

Our Later Years Subject Selections have now concluded where every Year 9, 10 and 11 students had an interview in relation to their Pathways and preferred subject. It was wonderful to hear about the aspirations of our students. More so, it was great that our students were well-researched and had an in-depth understanding of achieving their goals. Over the coming weeks, the Later Years Team will review students' preferences and design a structure that best caters to our students’ subject preferences. I wish to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Stevens and the Later Years Team, as well as staff volunteers, for their work.

The Student Voice Leaders also visited our Acadia Age Care in our work to engage greater with our community and for our students to connect/build relationships with people from a difference generation. Thank you to Ms Whittingham for her work in building this important partnership It was a delight to welcome our Mayor of Moonee Valley City Council Pierce Tyson as guest speaker to our Term 3 Assembly. Mayor Tyson, a former student at BPC addressed the entire school about resilience, which was enjoyed by everyone. It was wonderful to hear some of the musical pieces from the production performed and celebrate as a school the recognition of our students’ achievements in sports, NAPLAN, Languages, Visual and Performing Arts. I’m proud to see so many of our students receiving awards across so many fields which reflects the diverse talents of our student community.

In the following weeks, our annual production, “Imagine this”, will be performed at the Clock Tower theatre. I’m excited to see our students showcase their creative efforts on stage after seven months of rehearsals. Our Year 9 students will be heading to Rubicon for their camp, Year 10 students will head up to Mt Buller for their Ski Camp, and our Year 11 will have their Senior Ball.

2024 Student Numbers

The college is anticipating a Year 7 intake between 190-210, which, if over 200 students, will be challenging on a budgetary and infrastructure level. With this intake, our preliminary projection is the college will have a student population of between 900 students.

Thanks

I’m grateful for the continual efforts and support from our community. This year we have seen positive outcomes in our learning, attendance and retention data. This is only possible due to the consistent processes in place at the college and the dedication of the college staff. I’m also thankful for our family support of the college in their support of the college and reinforcing our expectations.

Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN Awards

In Term 1, we had our year 7 and 9 students sit the NAPLAN Test as we do each year. The College has achieved another set of outstanding results, where our year 9 students outperformed the state and Network averages, and also beat some of our high achieving similar schools. A big congratulations to all of our year 7 and 9 students that completed NAPLAN tests.

Congratulation to our Year 9 students below who received outstanding results in their NAPLAN tests. These students received Certificates of Achievement signed by the Minister of Education, Hon. Ben Carroll and CEO Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, Kylie White.

Wicked the Musical

26 students involved in BPC Instrumental music had a Wicked experience attending (for many of them) their first Theatre production.

Our students experienced a professional performance showcasing live musicians and performers. This greatly supports students our instrumental music students to engage in the industry.

Wicked the Musical is performing at the lavish and opulent Regent Theatre in Collins Street. Our students were treated to a grand tour of many facilities including the orchestra pit, and were blown away by the performance and music. Loved, loved, loved it! many of our students said of the performance.

Term 3 Values Focus is Resilience!

As we step closer to exam season, we know that students (and families) are placed under increased levels of stress. Resilience is one of our core values at BPC, and we are fortunate to work closely with local psychologist, Maria Ruberto from Salutegenics Psychology in Essendon who has worked with staff and students previously. Maria has recently featured on The Imperfects Podcast, alongside The Resilience Project founder, Hugh van Cuylenburg.

This podcast is a great tool for educators and parents to better understand what resilience is and how we can support our young people as they navigate life's twists and turns. Maria also offers some interesting insights into how we understand resilience building with neuro-diverse young people, too, which is sometimes often misunderstood.

We thank Maria for her continued support of the college and look forward to future collaborations with her.

Students Soar to New Heights on Qantas Hanger Tour

On the 7th of August, Buckley Park students had the unique opportunity to embark on a fascinating tour of the Qantas aeroplane hangars at Tullamarine. The experience provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at the comprehensive workings of the aircraft maintenance industry, including a delve into the structures, avionics and aircraft mechanic apprenticeships.

Guided by experienced professionals, Students were able to explore close-up the inner workings of jet engines and plane cockpits, investigating details with apprentices along the way and gaining first hand insight into aircraft systems. Many were amazed by their complex and innovative designs with extensive maintenance protocols. They had the opportunity to actively participate and discuss these protocols, and were particularly impressed by the high safety standards.

The tour was a great success, sparking interest in the vast and interesting career paths of the aerospace industry. We extend a heartfelt thanks to Qantas for facilitating such an engaging a informative tour! Jordan Sezai YR12
