Buckley Park College offers an accredited Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program and is a member of TAASS – The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools.

 

What does acceleration mean? 

The SEAL Program challenges students through their secondary education with learning experiences that are tailored to the needs of talented learners. There is a greater emphasis on higher order thinking and learning skills and independent learning and research. Course content is compacted in core subjects so that year 7-10 curriculum is covered within the first three years. Enrichment is provided in core subjects by broadening of content, understanding, experience and skills to a level appropriate to the students’ stage of development. Extension leads to in depth study and the integration and application of knowledge at a deeper level. Year 10 students commence their VCE studies by selecting some VCE subjects to begin as year 10 students. At Year 11 & 12 students take further VCE studies with students who meet requirements having the opportunity to take a first year university subject while in Year 12 as part of the Higher Education VCE Studies.

 

What will the curriculum be?

Students in the SEAL Program take the same subjects as all other students at their year level. The difference will be in the complexity of the work and the rate at which it is completed. Year 7 students take the following subjects:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities
  • Languages*
  • Art
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Food Technology
  • Information Technology
  • Physical Education
  • Sport and Health Education

Development of social relationships with a broader range of peers will take place through the sport elective program, the Year 9 & Year 10 elective programs and co-curricular activities.

By accelerating my subjects in years 7-10 it undoubtedly improved my ability to succeed in VCE subjects later in high school. The foundation in Maths, Science, English and Humanities left me in a position where I could take VCE subjects early, and more importantly, confidently. 

Being in the SEAL program didn't make me feel any different to other students, we were after all, part of the same year level. Knowing that there had been competition to be part of this program made me feel privileged to be part of it. The SEAL program – to most people it is just a program, but to me it’s more than that. It’s the class that has extended me in my work and even changed the way I view school – once seen as tedious and futile, it is now a place where I am appropriately challenged and am able to enjoy my work. I have found many friends through this program and as a whole, we are much closer than any other year 9 class. This class has been a wonderful asset to my education, and it has given me the skills and confidence I need to reach my highest potential.
