Debating and Public Speaking Update

The first semester at Buckley Park College has been filled to the brim with debating and public speaking events.  The Senior debating teams are gearing up for their final debates, and have represented BPC extraordinarily well in the face of some very tough topics. Georgia Panopoulos (Year 11) was the sole representative of BPC at the DAV Senior Public Speaking competition, and spoke extremely well on her chosen and impromptu topics.

We have also had record numbers of Year 7 and 8 students register their interest in the DAV Junior debating competition, with four full teams being registered at five students each. These students are now gearing up to begin their debating run closer to the end of Term 3.

VCAA Plain English Speaking Awards 2017

Joseph Wilczer (Year 12) was the sole representative of BPC at the annual VCAA Plain Speaking English competition held at Overnewton College.  This is a prestigious award for only the best speakers in the state competing each year.  Joseph worked extremely hard to develop a powerful speech on domestic abuse and how we, as a society, should shape our responses to it.  On the day, he represented BPC to an extremely high standard, delivering his speech with passion and precision, and also delivering an extremely well-through-through impromptu speech on the topic of ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’.  Although he did not make it through to the finals, his dedication to his public speaking and his message was well received by everyone, including the judges and audience members. Well done Joseph!

DAV Junior Public Speaking 2017

In testament to the growing interest in debating and public speaking at BPC, we were represented by six students at the DAV Junior public speaking competition this year, held at Maribyrnong College. The students involved were Eric Rametta and Sarah Boghossian of Year 7, and Isabelle Orosz, Sam Nicholls, Luke Zielinski and Hannah Potter of Year 9. They all did wonderfully well with their prepared speeches, and faced tough topics for their impromptu speaking. Thanks to all these students for working so hard and representing the school so wonderfully on the day.
