On Wednesday 8th March, Buckley Park College was welcomingly invited by the Essendon Rotary Club to attend the 6th annual International Women’s Day breakfast, hosted by Moonee Valley Mayor, Cr Andrea Surace.

Along with Louise Gaynor, Kelly Salpietro, School Captains Ella Pagano and May Sheldon, Cheyne Wilkinson, Taneisha Smith, Ella Ryan and I, we went to the Moonee Valley Council Civic Centre to share breakfast with women of the community to celebrate International Women’s Day. Together we heard from 2 inspiring guest speakers who embodied this year’s theme #beboldforchange; The Honourable Judy Maddigan former Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly and Jacquie Orriss Brown, advocate and fundraiser for #DoItForMS

These women acknowledged the efforts of our former sisters and thanked them for their immense contribution to the equality of women in today’s society. They reminded us that 40 to 50 years ago women weren’t allowed the civil right to vote nor sit at a bar with their spouse. We as women have come in leaps and bounds and acknowledged the things still yet to be achieved.

Change is an evolutionary thing and unfortunately we as women still have a long way to go. #beboldforchange has been set as this year’s theme to encourage younger generations to stand up against inequality and fight for women as one; attending the breakfast this morning, we couldn’t help but be inspired ourselves.

Overall it was an enriching experience that we were honoured to be a part of. We would like to thank President Maria Kouppas, Essendon Rotary and Rotarian Tamara for inviting us to the event and encourage you all to celebrate International Women’s Day each year on March 8th. For more information please visit and support the women in your life.
